Interactive maps are frequently integrated into mobile apps for B2B and B2C uses. Popular map apps are ubiquitous on cell phones, so most of us feel familiar with the basics of using maps. However, there are many unique considerations in customizing maps for use inside applications for specialized audiences. UX designers can greatly improve the value and user experience of maps by addressing common challenges through thoughtful design. In this talk, we’ll discuss key decisions that UX designers need to make when integrating a map within a specialized product: configuring the design of the map, designing informative layers, zoom and search interactions, drilldown to additional details, alternative views of the data, incorporating user actions into the map, location-based adaptive interfaces, and audio input/output. We’ll draw on examples of SaaS and enterprise apps that we have designed for shipping and real estate.
